The protection engine combines signature detection, heuristics, behavioural monitoring and a reputation service that scores files by how widely and how long they have been seen in the wild. Performance and privacy
Norton 360 is heavier at install and during the first full scan than a bare-bones scanner, then settles. On an SSD-equipped modern PC the impact is not noticeable in normal use; on spinning-disk or 4 GB RAM machines the initial scan is felt.
The suite collects telemetry for its reputation service. Review Gen Digital's privacy notice before enabling identity features, which require additional personal data by design.

Norton 360 Deluxe raises device coverage, expands backup storage and adds parental controls, which is why it is the tier most US families end up on. Higher tiers layer identity monitoring on top.
The malware engine is identical across tiers. If your only goal is virus protection, the cheapest tier protects you exactly as well as the most expensive one — you are paying for services, device count and storage.
Norton download: what actually happens
The Norton download is a small stub that authenticates against your account and then pulls the current build. That is why you cannot meaningfully archive an offline installer for later: the stub always fetches the latest engine. Expect a reboot prompt and a first full scan that can take 20–60 minutes depending on how much data you have.
